Introduction

Rakhaldas Haldar can be said to have laid the foundation of the modern Haldar Family.

He was born in exciting times. Rajaram Mohan Roy had just died but his reforms about Sati was in place. The Brahmo Samaj started by Roy was having teething troubles. Maharshi Devendranath Tagore took up the cause of Brahmo Samaj in which RDH at the age of 19 became an active proselyter.

He was also closely associated with the reformer and educator Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar who was present and initiated the marriage of RDH's widowed sister-in-law Mokshada.

Macaulay had introduced compulsory English and RDH became voracious reader of English classical, dramatic and philosophical works, He was the sixth Indian to go to England for studies and he did law from University College, London.

RDH joined the Civil Service at Calcutta on his return from London and he had a remarkable stint in office.

For more details please refer to MID VICTORIAN HINDU , a biography by his son Sukumar Haldar and RAKHALDAS HALDAR by his great-grand son Deepankar Haldar.
